What is tea? Is the leaf from a wild tea forest or from plantation? What is
the tea plant’s variety or cultivar? Where is the origin? Is it hand
plucked? Spring crop? A second flush? How the tea is made? What types of
tea? What is the leaf style? How to make tea properly? What kind of
aroma/color/taste/finish should we be looking for? Is this a straight tea
from a tea estate or a blend? How do you make your tea selection? How would
you have your own packages designed? The list can go on…All these tea basics
need to be studied before you launch your tea business.
Nevertheless, with the diversity of tea and its culture one could offer very
different niche in the trade. Running an old world Victorian style tea room
is quite different from a more contemporary Asian style tea house. The
accoutrements and other merchandise suitable for one might be completely
different and unfit for another. Even the type of teas served in one will
undoubtedly be different than the other. Making a pot of Oolong is entirely
different than from making a pot of Dragon Well. The environment, the occasion,
the company you have your tea with are all factors. So often you will find
the same tea tastes very differently-- The way you treat tea whether to
quench the thirst or to enjoy it to fulfill your lifestyle, tea will reward
you exactly what you have in mind.
Tea Education is a lifetime on-job training course, and it is done in
practice every day. Try to cup tea as often as possible, and keep the
cupping log for your own review. In the process, figure out the
suggested preparation for each tea with the best combination of 3T (tea
amount, water temperature, and time for infusing) for sampling, tasting or
serving.
In tea education, we believe it is not what you teach, but how you teach and how you learn. Over the years, ABC TEA commits to offer Tea Tasting Classes, Tea Sampling Events, and Tea Tours. These are designed in two levels, one is more intensive targeted for tea trade; and another one set for general consumers as community service and to cultivate new customer base as well. We don’t think tea education should be limited to in the class room. It is indeed all about reaching out and willing to share the tea experience. We always learn something new about tea from each interaction with tea enthusiasts and we simply embody these precious treasures with what we are offering.
